Banyan Tree, 2025, silkscreen print

This remarkable hand-pulled limited edition screenprint in 26 colours is based on the original painting Banyan Tree, c.1988, by Howard Hodgkin. The print is stamped with the artist’s signature and is authorised by his estate, his executors and the trustees of the Howard Hodgkin Legacy Trust.

Howard Hodgkin painted Banyan Tree in 1988, when he accompanied John Russell on his first visit to India. Russell was the chief art critic of The New York Times, and had expressed his interest in writing a book about the artist.

The pair were accompanied by Rosamond Bernier, the distinguished art journalist and lecturer who founded L’Oeil magazine.

Arriving late one day at Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary, they found the birds had retired to sleep, so instead were subjected to a bloodthirsty nature film in the open air. Howard squinched but Rosamond rescued the situation when she retrieved a flask of whisky from her handbag.

The branches of the Banyan Tree (Ficus benghalensis) reached the ground and became secondary trunks. Considered sacred and associated with wisdom and strength, it is India’s national tree. On the reverse of this 26-colour silkscreen print, you will see the inscription from Howard… ‘For JR and RB from HH and AP’… which appeared on the original painting, marking a beautiful pictorial reference to the Indian trip, and the memory of the Banyan Tree.
