Prints

Beginning while still a student he has explored the full gamut of graphic multiples, including screen-printing, lithography, collage, carborundum etching, aquatints and hand-colouring.

Indian Leaves

In 1978 he worked intensively in Ahmedabad, Gujerat with hand-made Indian Khadi paper. It was brought to him as it was made, still wet and he had to paint on it with vegetable dyes before it dried.

Indian Waves

In 1990/1991 Hodgkin worked in Wiltshire where he imprinted 30 sheets of hand-made Indian Khadi paper with images of waves. He then painted over them in gouache to evoke images of India. Put aside and then forgotten, they were first exhibited in 2014.

Design

Hodgkin’s work has often played with elements of theatre. He has designed sets and costumes for opera and ballet, scarves, murals for architectural projects in London and Delhi, book illustrations, textiles for Designers Guild, posters and other graphic work.

Quantel Paintbox

In 1986 Hodgkin was invited along with five other artists, including David Hockney and Sidney Nolan to create artworks using the computer system Quantel Paintbox. Hodgkin spent two days learning how to use the system and two days using the device to experiment with set and costume designs for Stravinsky's Pulcinella.
