Excerpt from catalogue notes:

Paint-laden, gestural brushstrokes in green, red and black form the core of the work bordered by a thick frame, teasing out tensions between flatness and depth. With Come Back Dull Care, Howard Hodgkin, one of England’s most celebrated contemporary artists, represents a decided stance against traditional easel painting. Trading canvas for wood early on in his career, Hodgkin further integrates the frame into the painting. “I’m thinking about making illusionistic spaces,” the artist said in an interview with David Sylvester in 1982, “but in making them, you don’t lose the flatness of the picture-plane. I know that for me nothing in painting matters more than that an artist should be able to create an illusion of depth without disturbing the flatness of the picture surface” (the artist quoted in: Marla Price, Howard Hodgkin: The Complete Paintings Catalogue Raisonné, London 2006, p. 101). Embracing time as a compositional element, his work is testament to his immersion in the intangibility of thoughts, feelings, and fleeting private moments.
