After Matisse

Notes: Hodgkin said of this work: ‘I attempted a number of previous After Matisse paintings that didn’t work, and as such no longer exist. Understanding Matisse’s painting has been such a huge part of my development that it was not going to be easy to hit the right mark. I was interested in trying to get some of the strength of Matisse and at the same time some of that relaxed tension it seems only he is capable of’ (quoted  in Auping, op. cit., p. 246.)
