The first state, dated 1964-67, was shown in ‘Howard Hodgkin: Recent Paintings’, Arthur Tooth and Sons, London, 28 February – 25 March 1967, cat. no.11; alternative title, Red Staff Room. The subject is the staff room at Corsham Court, Bath. A rare example of a study for this painting was published in Norman Blamey, ‘The Function of Drawing’, monad 1, Summer 1964, p.31, ill.
