Layla and Majnun 2016

Layla and Majnun is a Mark Morris Dance Group production. Howard Hodgkin designed the costumes and decor. All of the musicians and dancers shared the stage space on platforms, in front of a backdrop of a reproduction of Hodgkin's painting "Love and Death". Morris describes it as “a visually, musically, and choreographically unified and self-contained concert piece. An enlightening tragedy.”

Evermore 1996

The wonderfully poignant short story by Julian Barnes is taken from his collection, Cross Channel. Howard Hodgkin responds to this haunting tale of an Englishwoman’s obsessive visits to her brother’s First World War grave in France with etchings and hand colourings, interspersed within the text.

IMAX Cinema 1996

Hodgkin was commissioned to design a large wrap around image for the Imax Cinema, Waterloo Place, London, designed by Avery Associates for the British Film Institute. The design was blown up to 15 metres in height. Hodgkin’s image is an abstraction of a large eye.

BBC Billboard Project 1992

A project set up by the BBC which aimed to take art out onto the street and place it directly into the context of people’s everyday lives. Hoping in the process to challenge traditional ideas of how art is presented and perceived. The project was documented in a series of TV programmes.

British Council HQ 1992

The Nutcracker 1992

Hodgkin’s designs for this opera by Matthew Bourne was not realised; “In this case we are left with fragments without a whole and have to make the creative leap ourselves in imagining how these designs could have been used.” John-Paul Stonard, Howard Hodgkin: Stage Designs, 2002.

The Way We Live Now - Susan Sontag 1991

This book is the result of a unique collaboration. 'The Way We Live Now' was first published as a short story in the New Yorker in 1986. It concerns the responses - doubting, possessive, comic - of a group of New Yorkers when they discover a close friend has Aids. Now Howard Hodgkin has created a series of hand-coloured engravings to go alongside the text.

Broadgate Centre 1988

Hodgkin designed a mural, Wave, for the swimming pool (now part of the Virgin Active Healthclub) in the Broadgate Centre, London EC2 (architect Peter Foggo; commissioned by Rosehaugh Stanhope). It was executed in Venetian glass mosaic.
